The Japanese rock garden 枯山水 karesansui or "dry landscape" garden, often called a zen garden, is a miniature stylised landscape through carefully composed arrangements of rocks, moss, pruned trees and bushes, and uses gravel or sand that is raked to represent ripples in water. Classical zen gardens were intended to imitate the intimate essence of nature, and to serve as an aid to meditation on the true meaning of existence. Each rock in a garden was then designed to have symbolic meaning- to represent and articulate a mountain, animal or tree, of the cycle of birth and death. The Singapore landscape is dotted with skyscrapers that punctuate both land and sky. These abstract rocks have hence been used to represent these giant monoliths- an attempt to help city dwellers find calm and connectedness within the bustle of the city.
